NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. -- Police said a teenage boy confessed to killing his mother after her decomposing body was found in a Miami-Dade apartment complex early Thursday morning.
The victim was identified as 35-year-old Renette Emile.
According to police, Emile, her 16-year-old son and her 3-year-old son lived in the Jade Winds Apartment complex on 18th Avenue and Northeast 191st Street.
Police said Emile's estranged boyfriend was suspicious after he hadn't heard from her for several days. On Wednesday night, he called police to check on Emile.
When police arrived, they found the woman's decomposing body in a bedroom.
Her 16-year-old son was there, along with the 3-year-old, who police said is the son of the victim and her estranged boyfriend.
Police said the body had clearly been inside the home for several days.
The 16-year-old and the estranged boyfriend were taken in for questioning. Miami-Dade police said the teenager confessed to killing his mother.
Police said the cause of Emile's death has not been determined, and the medical examiner's office is investigating.
Miami-Dade police said the teen will be charged.
Police have been at the home twice this year for the teen, once for a domestic disturbance, another time for a charge of reckless driving.
"He's been a troubled kid," said Chris Thomb, a friend of the family. "His mom tried to steer him in the right direction."
Family members are caring for the 3-year-old boy.
