JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- JSO officers said the death of a Westside infant appears to be just a tragic accident.
Officers responded to a home in the 1300 block of Laclede Avenue at about 7 p.m. Thursday, and Sgt. Shawn Coarsey said JFRD was already working to resuscitate the nearly 1-year-old when they got to the scene.
An ambulance took the child to a local hospital, but Coarsey said the child died there.
The child's mother was cooking dinner and investigators believe some other children in the apartment at the time may have gone outside and left the home's sliding glass door open, Coarsey said.
There was a large five-gallon bucket outside the doorway that had filled with water. Coarsey said the child stuck his head in the water and that's where rescuers found him.
Police won't pursue criminal charges against the mother, but Coarsey said DCF will conduct its own investigation.
