JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people are behind bars after a planned robbery turned into a murder, police said.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney, officers were called to a home invasion robbery at 1530 Clark Street just before 6 a.m. Friday. But Hackney said the evidence didn't support the story that 29-year-old Merienne Blake and 19-year-old Enrique Pajaro told them then.
After further investigation, Hackney said Blake and Pajaro finally admitted that they had called the victim, Robert Scott, and asked him to bring drugs to Blake's house for them. The pair told officers they planned to rob Scott once he got to the house.
Upon arrival, Scott hung out with Blake and Pajaro and smoked crack with them, Hackney said. That's when Scott fell asleep. But he got a rude awakening.
Scott awoke to Blake and Pajaro beating him, and began to fight back. But the duo was ready for this and used a sledge hammer to subdue Scott, Hackney said.
After the beating didn't bring about the end result they sought, Pajaro strangled Scott and Scott eventually died.
Hackney noted that the entire time the incident was unfolding in the bedroom, Blake's 3-year-old daughter was home and said that the little girl even witnessed some of the event.
That child is now with relatives as is her brother, who was away with his father at the time of the murder.
Pajaro and Blake now face murder charges. They're slated for a hearing early Tuesday morning.
