JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There will be no JSO layoffs next month.

Late this evening the sheriff's office released a statement saying the three percent salary reduction that officers recently voted to accept was enough to prevent firings.

Back in October, Sheriff John Rutherford held a news conference announcing the layoffs and budget cuts coming his department's way.

In the end the department saw 77 layoffs, which consisted of 48 officers and 29 civilians, from Community Service Officers to a stable manager.

At that time, Rutherford said he expected to make 34 more layoffs by March unless the city took over the JSO fleet.

Thursday night's statement from Lauri-Ellen Smith, special assistant to Sheriff Rutherford, said "the Sheriff continues to have concerns that city budget has not taken the 1.2 million he requested from fleet management's budget. Instead, it was taken from the salary budget, over the Sheriff's strong objection."
