Cookeville, TN (Sports Network) - Kevin Murphy scored an astonishing 50
points, a career-high, as he guided the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to a
98-80 win over SIU-Edwardsville in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Eblen
Center.
Murphy, who entered the week as one of the top scorers in the nation with 21.3
ppg, converted 16-of-21 shots from the floor, including 6-of-9 behind the
three-point line, and also connected on 12-of-14 at the free-throw line for
the Golden Eagles (14-9, 6-4 OVC) as they won for the third time in the last
four outings. Also scoring in double figures for the hosts was Javon McKay
with 15 points.
The Cougars (5-14, 3-7) had five players score in double figures on the night,
led by Jerome Jones who tallied 25 points, but still the team bowed for the
sixth time in as many outings. Mark Yelovich registered a double-double with
19 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Kris Davis and Derian Shaffer with 11
points apiece and Kevin Stineman 10 points off the bench.
Tech shot an impressive 54.5 percent from the floor in the first half,
including 50.0 percent behind the three-point line, as the hosts grabbed a
48-33 lead at the break.
In the second half it was much of the same for the Golden Eagles as they gain
connected on half of their three-point tries and 55.6 percent from the field,
en route to the 18-point win.
The scoring output by Murphy marks the top effort at the Division I level this
season.
