JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 55-year-old man is dead following an eight-vehicle wreck on Philips Highway Friday morning.
All southbound lanes of Philips just north of Baymeadows Road were blocked and didn't reopen for hours.
Susan Beihler, 52, was stopped at a red light in the 8000 block of Philips Highway shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday when her Honda CRV was struck from behind by a Toyota pickup driven by 71-year-old Robert Charles. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, he failed to see that traffic was stopped.
The Honda then crashed into a vehicle in front of it and that vehicle hit another. Eight vehicles ended up being involved.
According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper, the pickup was driving erratically and moving at a high rate of speed.
The passenger in the CRV, Charles Biehler, 55, of Jacksonville Beach, was transported to Shands where died, the report said. Susan Beihler suffered serious injuries.
An FHP accident report said Charles of Fleming Island had minor injuries from the crash, and Susan Biehler had to be treated for serious injuries. Both were also taken to Shands.
