That "all American" muscle car, Chevy's Camaro, is coming home to the U.S. to get ready for a next-generation muscle car battle in 2015.

General Motors moved production of the Camaro and the now defunct Pontiac Firebird to Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, Canada back in 1993, when the fourth generation went into production.

The Camaro went on hiatus in 2002 until Chevy debuted the fifth generation in 2009. Camaros are currently built at GM's Oshawa Flex Plant in Ontario, Canada.

The sixth-generation Camaro will be built at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan. It's a big win for the U.S. since GM said the decision is based on a comprehensive business case.

America's biggest automaker said lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies were key factors. It will be built alongside the Cadillac CTS and ATS, which are also rear-wheel-drive cars.

The Canadian Auto Workers Union is not happy. "General Motors has once again shown a complete and utter disregard for its workers and also Canadians in general, whose tax dollars kept the company out of bankruptcy," said CAW National President Ken Lewenza in a news release.

But for muscle car fans it's welcome news because it shows General Motors is committed to the Camaro's future, which wasn't always been the case.

Look for the next-generation Camaro to debut in the fall of 2015.
Topspeed.com reports that Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser said the next-generation muscle car will likely be lighter and also offer a choice of smaller engines.

2015 is going be huge for muscle car fans. Ford is also planning to release its next-generation Mustang in 2015 and watch for the Dodge Challenger to be replaced with what is expected to be called the SRT Barracuda, in a nod to the old Plymouth Barracuda.

Although Chrysler has been quiet officially, multiple automotive outlets such as Car and Driver, Motor Trend and others have been reporting Chrysler is working on a next-generation muscle car coupe.
