Town of blue: Trenton, Fla. community mourns slain deputies

The community of Trenton dressed and decorated in blue to honor the two deputies that were shot in a restaurant in the area.

In Gilchrist County, a single color shines through the darkness. In Trenton, the sky is gray and the town is numb after two Gilchrist County sheriffs deputies were killed in an ambush Thursday.

Noel Rodriguez, 29, and Taylor Lindsey, 25, were two protectors to neighbors two friends.

But out of the gray, something stands out: Lots and lots of blue. From the flowers that lined the streets to the flags Jeff Cherry hung outside his restaurant.

“I think you’re going to see a small community that is broken right now, but is going to have a certain level of resilience and is going to come back stronger than ever,” Cherry said.

Blue ribbons line the walk down the street to The Burger Spot, showing the town's true colors.

“We’re going to rise above this,” Gloria Seligman said. “We’re going to unite.”

All of the customers that came in on Friday wore blue and all of the employees were too.

Every sheriff's deputy that stopped by ate for free.

“I just feel that any way to connect, any way to make someone’s grieving period better, then of course everybody pull together and do it,” said Terrie Deen, the owner.

There’s blue just about everywhere in the small town.

“It’s overwhelming the amount of support the community is getting,” Seligman said.

It’s fitting, because what else is color than the reflection of light?

“As tragic as this is, it’s great to be a part of a community that’s as good as this one,” Cherry said.

Cherry hung several flags over his restaurant Friday, but one closer to the street has been there for months, he said.

At one point, he received a note from Ramirez thanking Cherry for his support.

Now, it hangs in his memory and the memory Taylor Lindsey, too.
