Family continues fighting insurance company as son discharged in a coma

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Four months after a near-fatal motorcycle accident that left a former football star who graduated Oakleaf High School in a coma, Drew Kohn was discharged from the hospital and sent home.

Before his 23rd birthday, a car plowed into Kohn's motorcycle. The impact of the crash knocked his helmet off. He was badly injured and suffered from a traumatic brain injury, a spinal cord injury, broken ribs, a broken pelvis and collapsed lungs. He has been in a coma ever since.

On Wednesday, he was transported to his parent's house in an ambulance. He is unable to walk or even talk.

His parents have been fighting their insurance company, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, to try and get him moved to the Shepard Center in Atlanta where they specialize in brain and spinal cord injuries. The treatment center has had success getting patients to wake up.

The center accepted him in their four-to-six week program.

However, Anthem refused their request and deemed it experimental and not medically necessary. It is also expensive, costing about $6,000 to $10,000 a day.

Furthermore, his family said Kohn needs around the clock care.

"The overwhelming part and anxiousness comes with his schedule," said Yolanda Kohn, Drew Kohn's mother. "Feedings, turning, making sure he is not getting an infection... there are real concerns because we are not in the medical profession."

When First Coast News reached out to Anthem, it released the following statement:
