PALATKA, Fla. – Two people were able to walk away from a crash involving a single engine propeller plane Sunday afternoon at the Palatka Municipal Airport, according to first responders.

An airport official tells First Coast News that a couple was inside the small plane when it ran off the runway during a landing attempt.

The plane came to rest on its side after possibly suffering from a gear collapse, according to an airport official.

Troopers identified the pilot as 51-year-old Erick Falk of Crystal River, Florida.

An Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson told First Coast News the plane was Piper PA-16, and it is believed that the aircraft made some sort of loop after a landing and flipped over around 2:55 p.m.

The pilot told investigators a strong gust of wind caused the 1949 Piper to overturn.

The Putnam County Emergency Services did respond to the incident and said that one of the occupants did have minor injuries but declined transport to a hospital.

According to the airport, the crash did not impact operations.

The FAA and the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.
