JACKSONVILLE, FL -- As children, many of us enjoyed cupcakes in mom's kitchen or in class for a birthday party. But now the cupcake is making a comeback.

Cupcakes are selling like hot cakes in bakeries and stores that sell only the small individual treat. The trend started in New York City and Los Angeles and has spread all the way to the First Coast.

Andra Hall is the owner of Camicakes, the First Coast's first cupcake only store. Hall says she knows why the treats are so popular. "Because they're cute and they are individual cakes so each person can have their own," says Hall.

But this new age of the cupcake isn't just about the standard chocolate or white cupcakes. Camicakes features several unique flavors. Red Velvet Cake with butter cream frosting and pecans. Other flavors include: cinnamon, Pineapple Toasted Coconut, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream and more.

When asked what cupcake he liked best, 3-year-old Logan Grace said "Pink." He's referring to the Classic Cami. It is yellow butter cream sponge cake with pink butter creme frosting.

But the cupcakes of today are not perfect. We try to make them look homemade," says Hall. "We don't try to fancy them up with any decorations. We just want them to look like something mom left for you on the counter."

Many customers say they like the idea of buying a single cupcake instead of having to buy or make a whole dozen. Camicakes sell the individual cakes for $2.25 or $2.75.

It's also very trendy to buy a dozen ($25) cupcakes for birthday celebrations. Brides and Grooms can even have a tower of cupcakes instead of a giant wedding cake.

Camicakes also offers cupcake bouquets. They include a flower pot container, cupcakes and a floral arrangement. The bouquets start at $35.

Camicakes is located in the food court at the Orange Park Mall. To place an order call tel (904) 541-1095.
