JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- Since 2012, Traci Irven has been helping the poor and undeserved girls and their parents who live in public housing in the 5th Avenue South area of Jacksonville Beach.
It was in 2012 that Irven and a good friend of hers started the non-profit organization called Girls With Goals.
The mission of Girls With Goals is to inspire, encourage and educate girls and their families through mentorship, academic and strong community support.
Three days a week Irven mentors, tutors and even counsels the girls who attend Fletcher Middle and Fletcher High School at the Carver Center.
Irven admits at times it can be challenging because many of the girls have trust issues. But because she once lived in public housing herself, she can relate to what these young ladies face on a daily basis and with time they open up.
Irven says because she know how critical it is to get these girls to see life beyond 5th Avenue South, she takes them to different colleges, brings in motivational speakers and events so that they can see there is more to life than what they see outside their front door.
Traci Irven, co-founder and executive director of Girls With Goals is our Hero Next Door. If you would like to become a volunteer with "Girls With Goals" or if you'd like to donate money you can call (904) 626-1389, visit their website or send an email to email@example.com.
