Atlantic Beach woman hula hooping her way to fame

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jenny Marie Wells says her life could have spun out of control, if not for her new found passion.

"Yeah, I was depressed and I was in a strange place," she said. "This was life changing."

She works out at the Karate Arts Dojo, not practicing her traditional martial arts routine, instead of what she calls "flow arts."

It's also commonly known as hula hooping.

"For someone who hates exercise and loves bacon this is the perfect workout," she said laughing.

She can spin multiple hoops at one time on her body, can contort herself in various positions to hoop, and can even do the hula while standing on her head.

And she's only been doing it for a year.

"For the first time in my life I'm happy with my body, it's a good feeling," she said. Wells has lost (and kept off) 125 pounds in the year that she's been hula hooping.

But she's not just casually revolving the plastic circle around her body, she works up a major sweat and gets quite intense.

She's even qualified for Season 4 of Hooping Idol, a web based show akin to American Idol where judges and viewers get to vote on who stays on.

You can click here to visit Hooping Idol and to vote for Jenny Marie.

Wells was one of 21 around the world picked to be on the show. She's survived the first 2 rounds and is now in the final 10. Voting in this latest round goes until Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. when she'll find out if she made it to the final 5.

"I want to connect with people," she said. "I want to make people laugh," she said.

The contest is based entirely on videos submitted by the participants. The judges tell the group a theme, and they submit hula-hooping videos to those themes.

Here are links to her videos, and considering they were shot and edited on a cell phone, there very good (and funny):
