Baby Dee is an internationally traveled singer, pianist, harpist, songwriter, and performer and her album Safe Inside the Day promises to be one of the most interesting albums of 2008. To say the album is theatrical and weird would probably be the understatement of the upcoming year. You see, Baby Dee sounds like she's part of the cast of Cabaret or Chicago.

The vocals on Safe Inside the Day are so over the top that they stand out like a lighthouse in a typhoon and they're just about impossible to ignore. In fact, they just about overpower the quietly played folky and mellow music that accompanies them. That's quite a feat when you consider that Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Andrew W.K., and Matt Sweeney all contribute to the music that's going on behind her.

Safe Inside the Day is loaded with star power and yet the album really never really gets past the whole campy thing. There's so much potential to be had here that it almost seems disappointing to think that this album sounds like Ute Lemper in a bad mood.

If you love camp or musical theatre, you'll love this album, but the rest of us, I'm afraid will find this difficult to listen to.
