Local couple celebrates 77 years of marriage

BAKER COUNTY, Fla -- For 77 years, Marvin Braddock and his wife Frances have worn their wedding rings. The two first met in Baldwin when they were very young.

"I was 9-years-old and she was 5," told Marvin.

It wasn't until about 10 years down the line when they were teenagers that they fell in love, but Marvin says at the time he never thought they would end up together.

"Because she was on one side of the tracks and I was on the other," said Marvin.

Frances' parents didn't want them to date and she briefly started dating someone else. But Marvin wasn't going to let the love of his life slip away.

"My mama told me that Frances and that man was going to get married and I said 'no she is not' and my mom said 'who is she going to marry'? And I said 'she is going to marry me'!" said Marvin with a smile.

He won her heart and they eloped on September 3 1937.

"I was 20 and she was 17 and everybody in town said it won't last more than 6 months and it did, quite a bit longer," told Marvin.

As they approach 77 years together, they have created an incredible lifetime of memories. They had two sons and now nearly 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"We raised them in the church and not one of them has ever been in a lick of trouble," said Marvin proudly.

Now at 97-years-old, Marvin comes up to see Frances nearly every day at the Macclenny Nursing & Rehab Center to talk or walk with her outside. Anything, as long as they are together.

Just as in love now as they were 77 years ago.

"She loves me, she really does and I love her," told Marvin," We make a pretty good match."
