Hollywood is notorious for breakups and makeups, and 2012 was no
different. Here's a look at couples that made it official and couples
that went their separate ways.
MARRIAGES:
Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman, June 2
Engagement: News of the pair's engagement spread shortly after the holidays in January 2012.
Wedding details: Barrymore,
five months pregnant at the time, and Kopelman, an art consultant, tied
the knot under a chuppah at the actress's Montecito, Calif., home. The
newlyweds welcomed a daughter, Olive, in September, rounding out a
happily-ever-after year for the former child star and Hollywood wild
child.
Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey, June 9
Engagement:
McConaughey popped the question on Christmas Day 2011. "Just asked
camila to marry me," he wrote in a post on his WhoSay account
accompanying a snapshot of the couple kissing in front of the Christmas
tree.
Wedding details: The longtime couple's children,
Levi, 4, and Vida, 2½, served as ring-bearer and flower girl at the
Catholic ceremony that took place at their Texas ranch. Almost a month
after the wedding, McConaughey took to Twitter to announce the pair are
expecting their third child.
Hilaria Thomas and Alec Baldwin, June 30
Engagement: It
was the perfect early birthday present for Baldwin when Thomas accepted
his proposal just a few days before he turned 54 on April 3.
Wedding details:
Baldwin wed Thomas, a yoga instructor who is almost 25 years his
junior, at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York. Celebrity guests in
attendance included Baldwin's 30 Rock co-star Tina Fey, his
brothers Stephen and Billy Baldwin, Woody Allen and wife Soon Yi,
Mariska Hargitay, Robert Kennedy Jr. and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Sept. 9
Engagement: What engagement? The couple never released a statement, and a ring was never spotted on Lively's finger.
Wedding details:
The top-secret wedding took place at Boone Hall Plantation in
Charleston, S.C., and featured Florence Henderson as the musical
entertainment. The wedding planners? Martha Stewart's team of
professionals!
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman, Sept. 29
Engagement: Now
here's a couple who really wanted to share their happy news! Just one
day after Hathaway's rep released a statement announcing their
post-Thanksgiving 2011 engagement, the couple was photographed on a cozy
outing with their dog in Central Park, with Hathaway showing off her
new sparkler.
Wedding details: The couple of four years wed
at a private estate in Big Sur on the California coast. Hathaway wore a
custom gown by Valentino, one of her favorite designers.
Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, Oct. 19
Engagement: While
no statement was ever issued, there were reports that Timberlake popped
the question while the two were vacationing in Jackson, Wyo., over the
winter holidays.
Wedding details: Biel donned a pink
Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown for her Italian nuptuals to the
former boy band leader, who serenaded his bride-to-be as she walked down
the aisle. The pair welcomed 100 guests, including Jimmy Fallon, Andy
Samberg, Timbaland and Biel's 7th Heaven co-star Beverley Mitchell, at the Borgo Egnazia resort in southern Italy for a weeklong wedding celebration.
BREAKUPS:
While
TomKat's demise was THE celebrity breakup of 2012, other former love
matches announced that they would be going their separate ways. USA
TODAY's Lorena Blas looks at the splits.
Heidi Klum and Seal
Announcement:"We
have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our
relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have
grown apart," they said in a statement released Jan. 22. "This is an
amicable process, and protecting the well-being of our children remains
our top priority, especially during this time of transition."
Background:As
a couple, they certainly looked good together on the red carpet. She is
a top fashion model turned television personality, and he is a
sharp-dressed famous Grammy-winning singer. They sizzled and brimmed
with PDA at every turn. After getting married in May 2005, they renewed
wedding vows annually. They are parents to Leni, 8, Henry, 7, Johan,
6, and Lou, 3.
Peter Facinelli and Jennie Garth
Announcement: "While
we have decided to end our marriage, we both share the same deep love
and devotion to our children. We remain dedicated to raising our
beautiful daughters together. We ask for privacy and respect during this
time," the couple said in a joint statement released March 1.
Background: Their marriage of 11 years was long by Hollywood standards. They met on a movie set in 1996. She was the lovable Kelly on Beverly Hills, 90210, and he was the 1990s hot hunk who matured to play a vampire dad in the Twilight movie franchise. They have three daughters: Luca, 15, Lola, 10, and Fiona, 6.
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis
Announcement: On
June 19, Depp's team released a statement saying, "Johnny Depp and
Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy
and, more importantly, the privacy of their children."
Background: It
was the romance that took him to France, where she was from. After
months of speculation that their longtime relationship was on the rocks,
his camp finally confirmed that the couple had separated. Together
since 1998, they never married and have two children, Lily-Rose, 13, and
Jack, 10.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
Announcement: On
July 16, their divorce became final. In December 2011, funnyman Brand
got serious for a moment and filed for divorce from his pop superstar
wife. "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," he said in a
statement. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
Background: In
September 2009, MTV viewers watched as VMA host Brand flirted overtly
with Perry during the broadcast. A few months later, he proposed to her
in India. In October 2010, they wed in an extravagant ceremony at a
resort in India. They both become immersed in work projects and traveled
the world together before they split.
Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman
Announcement: On
Oct. 8, sad news broke that this longtime, and we mean longtime,
Hollywood couple had separated. Their rep, Stan Rosenfield, confirmed
the split.
Background:The
actors and comedians wed in 1982 and have three grown children, Lucy,
29, Grace, 27, and Daniel, 25. As recently as Dec. 6, DeVito told an
interviewer that he and Perlman are trying to work things out. He said,
"Rhea and I are really close. Actually, still together, just separate,
but together."
