2012 was the year of TMI as far as some high-profile celebrities go.
From a messy extramarital affair to an ugly brawl related to a bitter
divorce, Hollywood managed to expose its less-than-sparkly side. Here's a
look at some of the scandals.
Kristen Stewart
It's
probably safe to say that July was not Stewart's favorite month in 2012.
On the 25th, after scandalous photos of her getting intimate with her
married Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders,
were published, she felt compelled to make an announcement to the world.
After all, she was leading lady on screen and in real-life to Robert
Pattinson, the Twilight hunk whom every girl wanted to win over.
They had been dating for three years. Her big reveal? Here it is: "I'm
deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close
to me and everyone this has affected," Stewart said in a statement.
"This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in
my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I
love him, I'm so sorry." The two appear to have reunited, at least on
the red carpet, during the promotional tour for the last installment of
their movie franchise, Twilight Breaking Dawn - Part 2.
Halle Berry
After
dating for more than a year, the Oscar-winning actress and French actor
Olivier Martinez were engaged. But the happy was mixed with high drama
as Berry was embroiled in a custody battle with former fiancé Gabriel
Aubry, father to their daughter, Nahla, 4. In June, she was ordered to
pay Aubry about $20,000 a month. She told InStyle magazine in an
interview that became public in October that she wanted to move Nahla
overseas to shield the girl from the spotlight. On Thanksgiving morning,
the drama really unfolded as Martinez and Aubry got into an
altercation at Berry's home in Los Angeles. Aubry was taken into police
custody after paying a visit to a local hospital for injuries he
received during the brawl. Within the week, her attorney said all was
settled in the custody dispute. "The parties have reached an amicable
agreement," a written statement from attorney Blair Berk said. "There
will be no further statements regarding this matter." Whew.
Kirstie Alley
The
actress, 61, released a tell-all memoir in the fall, and as expected,
she did not hold back. It wasn't that she bashed her enemies. It was
like a tale of her loves - all of them. What hit the media spotlight
first? Well, she was in love with John Travolta while she was still
married to actor Parker Stevenson. In promoting her book, The Art of Men, she said in an interview with Barbara Walters that she and Travolta had serious off-screen chemistry while making Look Who's Talking
in the mid-1980s. "Believe me, it took everything that I had, inside,
outside, whatever, to not run off and marry John. And be with John for
the rest of my life," Alley said. She added that Travolta was the
"greatest love of my life." Who else did she have a thing for? Patrick
Swayze. Alley, who was still with second husband Parker Stevenson, and
Swayze, who was with longtime love Lisa Niemi, began an intense
relationship while filming 1985's North and South, Alley told TV's Entertainment Tonight.
"Both of us were married. We did not have an affair," Alley said. "But
again, I think what I did was worse. Because I think when you fall in
love with someone when you're married, you jeopardize your own marriage
and their marriage. It's doubly bad." Um, OK.
Angus T. Jones
On Nov. 27, the 19-year-old actor began to make amends for saying some, well, pretty interesting things about his TV sitcom, Two and a Half Men. "Without qualification, I am grateful to and have the highest regard and respect for all of the wonderful people on Two and a Half Men
with whom I have worked and over the past 10 years who have become an
extension of my family," he said in a statement. Jones, who has played
Jake Harper since Men's premiere in 2003, credits co-creator
Chuck Lorre and others at CBS and Warner Bros., the show's producer, for
"what has been one of the most significant experiences in my life to
date. I thank them for the opportunity they have given and continue to
give me and the help and guidance I have and expect to continue to
receive from them." What exactly had he said previously that exposed a possible fractured or dysfunctional relationship with his bosses? "If you're watching Two and a Half Men, please stop watching Two and a Half Men. I'm on Two and a Half Men.
I don't want to be on it. ... Please stop filling your head with
filth," he said on a video posted on YouTube by the church site The
Forerunner Chronicles. He continues: "Do some research on the effects
of television and your brain, and I promise you you'll have a decision
to make when it comes to television and especially with what you watch
on the television. It's bad news. ... I don't know if it means any more
coming from me, but you might not have heard it otherwise." He probably
felt better after getting that off his chest.
The Jackson family
Will
the Jacksons ever be over the drama? Two years after his death, Michael
Jackson was still making headlines, thanks to his siblings and
children. In mid-July, siblings Janet, Jermaine, Rebbie, Tito and Randy
sent an angry letter to the two men overseeing the King of Pop's estate,
accusing them of fraud. The letter was made public and an estate
spokesman denied the accusations: "Any doubts about the validity of
Michael's will and his selection of executors were thoroughly and
completely debunked two years ago when a challenge was rejected by the
Los Angeles County Superior Court, the California Court of Appeals and,
finally, the California Supreme Court." A few days after the letter
made the media rounds, family matriarch Katherine Jackson was reported
missing by the 82-year-old matriarch's nephew, Trent, who said she has
not been heard from in a week. The next day, however, Katherine's son
Jermaine Jackson as well as the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
confirm that Katherine is resting with family members in Arizona. And
in the meantime, Michael's daughter, Paris, tweeted about her "missing"
grandmother. More excitement ensued when a few days later, Los Angeles
County sheriff's deputies paid a visit to Katherine Jackson's home in
Calabasas, Calif., after an altercation took place there. Photos from
the scene showed Michael's siblings Janet and Jermaine present. Tito
backed down from his accusations about Michael's estate: "I completely
retract my signature from the July 17th letter sent to the Executors of
my brother Michael's estate and repudiate all the claims made against
them. I don't want any part of that letter whatsoever." Meanwhile, T.J.
Jackson, Tito's son, planned to seek temporary guardianship of Michael's
three children. On July 25, after an emergency court hearing in Los
Angeles, Katherine temporarily lost custody of her three grandchildren.
Michael's nephew T.J. was appointed temporary guardian after Paris and
Prince consented to being in T.J.'s custody in the absence of their
grandmother. On July 26, Katherine arrived back to her home in
Calabasas. "grandma's here! #thankyougod," Paris tweeted. We think
that's all, folks. For now.
