A Broadway revival of The Trip to Bountiful planned for the spring just acquired additional star power.
It
was announced Thursday that leading lady Cicely Tyson will be joined by
Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr., pop and stage veteran Vanessa Williams
and rising star Condola Rashad (a Tony Award nominee for Stick Fly) in the new production of Horton Foote's play, directed by Michael Wilson.
Gooding
and Williams will play the son and daughter-in-law of Tyson's
character, an elderly woman who wishes to revisit her small home town in
Texas. Rashad will play a young woman whom Carrie meets during her
journey.
Like Broadway stagings of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof in recent years, the new Bountiful casts
African-American actors in roles traditionally played by white
performers. Its 14-week engagement is set to begin previews March 31 and
open April 23 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
