You go, girls.
In a series first, Dancing With the Stars' Season 15 final performance show on Monday featured three females. No guys.
Shawn
Johnson, Kelly Monaco and Melissa Rycroft had to perform two dances for
judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli. They got to
pick a favorite dance from the season to re-do, and then perform the
always crowd-pleasing freestyle, this time with bells and whistles to
"supersize" it.
Here's how the ladies did:
Melissa Rycroft
"I
felt like we had so many hurdles to overcome this season," she said to
her partner, Tony Dovolani, who noted unhappily that he has "waited 14
seasons" for the chance to win. Their repeat dance was a spicy samba
with confetti and streamers. Bruno called her a "Brazilian bombshell,"
citing her technique as being "great" and her confidence as having
"blossomed." Carrie Ann praised her abs and said the whole number was
"fabulous." Len loved her technique and rhythm, too. Scores: 10, 10, 10 =
30.
For their freestyle, Tony told Melissa he wanted to "showcase
your softness, your beautiful lines" with a contemporary dance. Melissa
explained to the cameras, "We don't want to go out and do what the
audience expects, so we're taking a huge risk." She said, "I don't want
to play it safe. ... The trophy's on the line." Barefoot and wearing a
white, sparkly outfit, Melissa looked fierce, but somehow angelic, as
she and Tony danced to Beyonce's I Was Here. Bruno said,
"Fantastic extension, beautiful lines ... you were a gem." Carrie Ann
loved it, "Freestyle. Jackpot." A nearly speechless Len said, "That had
passion. It was wonderful." Scores: 10, 10 ("I wish I had an 11!"), 10 =
30. Total: 60.
Kelly Monaco
"We made it to
the finals without getting a 10," noted Kelly with a sly smile. Her
partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, picked their previous paso doble as their
re-do. Len loved it. "Your best dance to date. Well done." Bruno called
her a "fire angel ... driven by desire." He noted a "slight mishap" with
her hand. Carrie Ann said, "There was a little goof-up (and the show
replayed it as proof)." But she praised the performance. Scores: 9.5,
10, 10 = 29.5.
In the rehearsal segment, we got to see the two
share a lollipop. Said Val: "Enjoy it, It's our last week together."
Said Kelly, "I don't want my journey with Val to end. Dancing with him
has been one of the best experiences of my life." Performing to I've Had the Time of My Life,
Kelly descended from the ceiling doing an aerial stunt for their
"supersized" freestyle dance. The sweet and romantic dance included
troupe dancers, a choir and Val doing his best Patrick Swayze
impersonation. Len said it "lacked a little bit of originality but the
actual dance was spellbinding." Bruno liked the mix of Cirque du Soleil
with Dirty Dancing. And, he said, "Patrick, I'm telling you, is
smiling on you." Carrie Ann said it was "the perfect dance... You told
us a happy ending to a beautiful love story." Said Brooke Burke-Charvet
to the two: "Is it showmance or romance? Everybody wants to know."
Replied Kelly, "There's still another day of interviewing. But Val
added, "Unconditional love." Scores: 10, 9.5, 10= 29.5 Total: 59.
Shawn Johnson
"Making
the finals was definitely the boost I needed," said Shawn. But in a
baffling move, she and Derek Hough decided to do their rule-breaking
Week 3 quickstep again. But "that's how we've played the entire season
-- by taking risks," says Derek. "In the end, it's been worth it," said
Shawn. They flipped, twirled, did the splits and zoomed around the
ballroom in the dance that was equally impressive the second time
around. Carrie Ann said, "It's a fantastic routine," but added, "I'm a
little disappointed, but I hope your risk pays off for you two." Len
said, "It is a fantastic routine, but you're not allowed to break hold,
which you did, you're not allowed to do lifts, which you did. You leave
me nowhere to go." Bruno said, "What you have achieved is truly
sensational." Scores: 9, 8.5, 9.5 = 27.
For their freestyle,
Shawn brought in the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team to help support her,
flip her and get her flying on the floor again. And she and Derek did
just that with the Fab Five joining them as they melded dance moves,
splits, tumbles, cartwheels and more into a dance that was exceptional.
The ballroom went nuts. Carrie Ann said it was "sensational! ... You do
not disappoint!" Len said, "It was totally unexpected ... so many little
different dance moves. Gold medal!" Bruno said it was "exciting,
explosive, brilliant!" Shawn said the performance, the season and Derek
have "meant the world to me." Scores: 10, 10, 10 = 30. Total: 57.
Tuesday, each finalist will perform a jive, cha-cha or samba for their final instant dance before the trophy is handed out.
