LOS ANGELES -- Australian actress Naomi Watts is taking on the role of a lifetime: Princess Di.
She has just been cast as the late royal, who died in 1997 at age 36 in a Paris car crash, in the upcoming movie Caught in Flight.
Watts recognized her new role in a statement praising Princess Diana: "It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role. Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."
It has been a busy month already for Watts, who landed in Sydney with her family last week. She promoted Jacob's Creek wine at a party on Feb. 1 and was spotted on the beach filming The Grandmothers with co-star Robin Wright on Tuesday.
