Need help getting started?
We don't expect anyone to walk in and know how to use every piece of equipment, so as part of your membership, we include 2 FREE orientation sessions with a personal trainer. The orientation sessions are designed to teach you how to use and set up each machine; teach you proper weight lifting form & technique; and "orient" you to the gym so that "all those machines" are less intimidating. To set up your orientation sessions simply contact the front desk at the location you use most frequently.
Beginning Weight Workouts
Although men and women usually have different goals when it comes to working out, the beginning processes for both should be quite similar. A common misconception most people begin with is that men should do heavy weight and low repetitions and vice versa for the ladies; however, the first routine for anyone, male or female, new to resistance training, should only differ slightly, if at all. Because the first concern should be an injury-free program, a regimen based in preparing the muscles and connective tissue (ligaments and tendons) for the rigors of training should be a priority. Also, developing core strength from the start will increase your overall progress by enhancing good posture, improving balance and coordination, and augmenting over-all caloric burn by utilizing more muscle tissue.
Now, wipe that look off of your face! We know that the above paragraph has completely destroyed everything that has been drilled into your minds over the years, but try to look at it like this:
If you are going to build a house, the first thing you have to do is pour a good foundation. A gigantic, beautiful house will be rendered useless and crumble if the foundation cracks because it was no good from the start.
Beginning an exercise program that is too advanced for a reconditioned, possibly sedentary, individual will most likely result in abnormal soreness and injury, which usually matriculates into making excuses for avoiding the gym. Exercise may make you sore, but it should never be debilitating, and proper form along with strong stabilizing muscles and connective tissue should never result in injury.
