Say it ain't so, G.I. Joe !

The popular action figure turns 50 this month.

Since 1964, when Hasbro introduced the 11 1/2-inch, muscle-bound, fatigue-clad, weapons-bearing toy, the original "moveable fighting man" has undergone many incarnations.

In the 1970s, in response to the fierce domestic opposition to the Vietnam War, Hasbro played down G.I. Joe's military aspect and introducerd "lifelike hair" and "kung-fu grip" versions. One G.I. Joe was garbed in scuba gear, another explorer's clothes.

Then came the shrinking of G.I. Joe. He was reformed into a 3 3/4-inch doll in the 1980s, and has remained a mini-me ever since.
