TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A special Florida Senate panel on protecting children is beginning its work.
Senate President Mike Haridopolos, a Merritt Island Republican, created the committee in response to the acquittal of Casey Anthony.She had been charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.
The Senate Select Committee on Protecting Florida's Children meets for the first time Monday.

One proposal it's expected to consider would make it a crime for parents who fail to report a child's disappearance to police within one or two days.
Anthony waited a month before telling her family that Caylee was missing.
The panel can make recommendations to the full Senate.
