Geomagnetic Storm Watch and auroras could be seen in a large part of the US this weekend.

NOAA Space Weather has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch this weekend. So what does this mean?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An extra layer of Halloween Spookiness may be seen for those in the Northern USA and Canada this weekend thanks to the Aurora Borealis.

On Friday NOAA issued a Strong Geomagnetic Storm Watch for the weekend following a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) that took place Thursday.

In short, a CME is more or less when the sun "burps" sending a stream of plasma out. In this case towards the earth. This often takes a few days to arrive, but when it does, it can result in Aurora's and some extreme cases satellite disruptions or even power outages.

This particular event will likely not be that extreme but Aurora's will be visible for a decent swath of the Northern US and into Canada.

Unfortunately on the First Coast, it will not be visible, but if you have friends or family in the north,h you may want to ask them if they have seen any shimmering in the Halloween sky this weekend.

Somewhat of coincidence, 18 years ago on Halloween 2003, one of the strongest solar storms in the 21st Century was also seen across the Northern US.
