Mathews Bridge back open; temporarily shut down as precaution after driver has medical episode

The all-clear was given by JFRD's Hazmat team, and the bridge was reopened around 4 p.m.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office temporarily shut down the Mathews Bridge Friday after a driver had a medical episode, according to JSO.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the 5300 block of the Arlington Expressway around 1 p.m. after a driver expressed that she was having a medical episode, firefighters said.

The driver believed that a package that she had just picked up may have caused her medical episode, JSO said.

The JSO Bomb Squad Unit along with investigators were called out to investigate the contents of the package she had ordered online.

The Mathews Bridge was closed as a precaution while they investigated, JSO said.

The all-clear was given by JFRD's Hazmat team, and the bridge was reopened around 4 p.m.

It is still unclear what caused the drivers medical episode, but she was checked out by JFRD on the scene. No further information has been given on her condition at this time.
