Improperly maintained pumps at Starke apartment complex leads to sewage being released in woods

The city said that Whispering Oaks Apartment complex located on Water Street needed to hire a licensed professional to repair the pumps.

Improperly maintained pumps led to sewage being released into the woods by a Starke apartment complex, the City of Starke said on Wednesday.

The city said that Whispering Oaks Apartment complex located at 900 S. Water St. was informed that they needed to hire a licensed operator or plumber to repair the pumps, clean up the spill and apply lime to the area.

A private lift station on the Eastside of the city led to this issue, the city said.

The city is not responsible for this situation, but they are working with the apartment complex's private contractor to help resolve this problem.

The city has informed the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to ensure that this issue is correctly resolved.

First Coast News reached out to the FDEP to determine what they are doing to help clean up the sewage and if any possible fines will be given, but we have not heard back.
