While the Jaguars stayed relatively healthy this past year, there were several players placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the regular season.
The preseason list included mostly offensive players - which would be a sign of things to come - as wide receivers Allen Robinson, Arrelious Benn and Jaelen Strong were three of the five players to be added to the injured reserve during the regular season.
Placed on IR: Left ACL tear, 9/12/17
Outlook: The Jaguars need to make a decision on Robinson's future with the team. There are a few options for both sides: a short-term "prove it" deal, a long-term contract or the franchise tag.
Robinson is only 24. He is just two years removed from a Pro Bowl season.
Still, the ACL tear may cause some concern for the Jaguars. Also, Robinson didn't have a strong 2016 season, which could fuel some potential front office skepticism.
Robinson is seemingly the team's best offensive player. If he is under contract next season, he will be the team's top option in the passing game.
Placed on IR: Hand injury, 9/1/17
Outlook: Rivera was signed as a free agent last offseason. He was brought in with the belief that he would be a playmaking pass-catcher for the Jaguars' offense.
Unfortunately for the team and Rivera, the tight end suffered a hand injury that caused him issues throughout training camp and the preseason. Rivera failed to make an appearance during the exhibition season and was placed on injured reserve.
Rivera is likely to compete with Ben Koyack and James O'Shaughnessy for a depth tight end role behind Marcedes Lewis and/or an offseason addition. Rivera could help the Jaguars as a potential safety net with the two-tight end looks.
Placed on IR: Right ACL tear, 8/3/17
Outlook: Tinker was a constant presence in the locker room during his rehabilitation from ACL surgery. A leader in the locker room, Tinker was consistently seen chatting with his teammates, despite his status on injured reserve.
The veteran is expected to be back next season and will likely compete with Colin Holba for the long snapper job. While Tinker makes the larger salary, his intangibles and experience may outweigh Holba's light salary.
Placed on IR: Pectoral injury, 9/19/17
Outlook: Bennett was only able to appear in one game before suffering a pectoral injury in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans. The former sixth-round pick has only played in 14 games during his three seasons in the league.
This summer will be huge for Bennett, as he will have to beat out Eli Ankou for the fourth defensive tackle spot. Bennett's NFL future may hang in the balance based on his performance this offseason.
Placed on IR: Left ACL tear, 12/26/17
Outlook: Strong had a whirlwind year before being placed on injured reserve in December.
He was waived by the Houston Texans after a suspension and ended up with the Jaguars. Jacksonville then cut him and placed him on the practice squad. Strong was eventually brought back to the active roster.
Strong showed some potential during the Jaguars' Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Before tearing his ACL in the game, Strong produced three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in his Jaguars debut.
The 6-foot-4, 217-pound receiver should have a shot at competing for a depth role in the offseason. Strong may be a good rotational red zone threat due to his size.
Placed on IR: Back injury, 9/2/17
Outlook: Greene has battled injuries over the last three seasons. While he shined as a punt returner during his rookie season, he has offered little in the passing game while with the Jaguars.
He was having a strong training camp last offseason before he suffered a back injury. He will compete with Strong and others for a backup role during the offseason program and training camp.
Placed on IR: Spinal cord injury, 8/4/17
Outlook: Mathers suffered a scary spinal cord injury during an August training camp practice. He was taken to the hospital and was ruled out for the season.
However, a league source told First Coast News that Mathers plans to continue his playing career this offseason. His future depends on being cleared by the Jaguars' team physician.
If he is able to participate in training camp, Mathers will probably compete for the third running back spot on the active roster.
Placed on IR: Leg injury, 9/4/17
Outlook: Wynn was having an outstanding training camp and preseason before he suffered a leg injury during the exhibition finale. The journeyman wide receiver looked like a lock for the roster as a deep threat.
This summer, Wynn will look to repeat his training camp performance and earn an active roster job with the Jaguars. He is an exclusive rights free agent, which means he can only play for the Jaguars this season.
Placed on IR: Knee injury, 11/18/17
Outlook: The veteran special teams ace was barely a contributor on offense last season. Entering the second year of a two-year deal, Benn will look to make the roster for a fourth-straight offseason.
Benn's special teams skills are clearly appreciated by the coaching staff. He could hang around as a role player, but if he wants to prolong his career, he is going to have to earn some playing time on offense.
Placed on IR: Undisclosed, 12/12/17
Outlook: Gaffney was brought in to fill a spot during training camp after I'Tavius Mathers suffered a spinal cord injury. He lasted a week on the active roster before being placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.
If Gaffney is able to stick around for the offseason program, he will compete for a depth spot behind Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon.
Placed on IR: Concussion, 9/4/17
Outlook: Harper was having a solid rookie offseason before he suffered a concussion in the preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Jaguars' safety position is one that lacks quality depth on paper, so Harper may be able to return and earn an active roster job this offseason. At worst, he will compete for a practice squad spot.
Placed on IR: Shoulder injury, 11/14/17
Outlook: The veteran took on Tinker's long snapper job during training camp. He played in nine games before suffering a shoulder injury.
Overton is set to become a free agent this March. With Tinker and Holba under contract, he isn't expected to be re-signed by the Jaguars.
