With the offseason underway, the Jaguars have plenty of tough decisions to make. Throughout our daily "Roster Reconstruction" series, we'll take a look at those key decisions at every position. Today, we'll focus on the defensive tackle position.
Editor's Note: This series only features players who were on the active roster or injured reserve last season. Future/reserve players will not be included in this series.
PREVIOUSLY ON ROSTER RECONSTRUCTION: Special Teams / Safety / Cornerback / Linebacker / Defensive End
Malik Jackson
Outlook: The Jaguars have received Pro Bowl production from Jackson over the last two years. He produced a career-high eight sacks last season and stepped up as a leader in the locker room. While he has a high price tag, his production has helped the Jaguars climb out of the NFL's pit of misery.
Kaye's Take (Staying or Going?): Jackson will stick around for at least one more year. His presence in the locker room and on the field has been worth the price of admission.
Abry Jones
Outlook: Now part of a two-man rotation with Marcell Dareus, Jones' role is somewhat in flux. However, he has provided a solid anchor at nose tackle after receiving a long-term contract a year ago.
Kaye's Take (Staying or Going?): Jones will be back, as his contract isn't that hefty. A contract restructuring could happen but I think that's pretty doubtful.
Marcell Dareus
Outlook: The Jaguars added Dareus before the trade deadline and he immediately upgraded the run defense. Acquired for a sixth-round pick, Dareus was a low-risk, high-reward addition. His work in the playoffs made the deal that much more rewarding.
Kaye's Take (Staying or Going?): While he is making a huge salary, it's hard to ignore his impact on the defensive line. I expect him to be back for at least one more season.
Eli Ankou
Outlook: The Canadian undrafted free agent was claimed off waivers before Week 1. He was immediately pushed into the lineup and contributed early on. Following the Dareus trade, Ankou took a backseat as a weekly inactive.
Kaye's Take (Staying or Going?): Despite his mid-season benching, the Jaguars are expected to bring back Ankou, who flashed during the earlier part of last season.
Michael Bennett
Outlook: Bennett, a former sixth-round pick, has played just one game over the last two seasons. This is a make-or-break offseason for the defensive tackle.
Kaye's Take (Staying or Going?): Bennett should be back for training camp. He faces a steep climb to make the final roster.
