Depth Chart: Finding the Jaguars' remaining needs

Jacksonville has very few glaring needs (on paper), which should free up opportunities during the prospect selection process.

Following a busy opening week of free agency, the Jaguars are in prime position to add the best players available in April's NFL Draft.

Jacksonville has very few glaring needs (on paper), which should free up opportunities during the prospect selection process. While the Jaguars still need to address some areas of depth, the team isn't in dire need of any major additions.

It's another sign of the Jaguars' recent ascension under the regime headed by Tom Coughlin, Dave Caldwell and Doug Marrone. If everything goes well, the Jaguars won't need to rely heavily on rookies to get to back to the AFC Championship Game.

To understand what needs to be accomplished during the remainder of the offseason, let's take a look at how First Coast News projects the depth chart right now:

QB) Blake Bortles

Thoughts: The Jaguars clearly need to find a backup quarterback for Bortles. Whether it's a veteran with game experience (Austin Davis, Drew Stanton, Derek Anderson) or a developmental rookie (Mason Rudolph, Logan Woodside, Chase Litton), the Jaguars need to find someone who can play in a pinch but also push Bortles down the road if he isn't playing up to standards.

RB) Leonard Fournette, T.J. Yeldon, Corey Grant, Tim Cook, Brandon Wilds

Thoughts: The three guys at the top of the depth chart make for a fine trio. The Jaguars may still address the position in the draft, potentially keeping four running backs on the roster for the second straight year. Cook is a guy who could have a shot at making the team as a running back/fullback hybrid.

FB) Tommy Bohanon, Hunter Dimick

Thoughts: The Texans Killer (Bohanon) could see competition this offseason, but Dimick isn't likely to be that guy.

TE) Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Marcedes Lewis, Niles Paul, James O'Shaughnessy, Ben Koyack, David Grinnage

Thoughts: The Jaguars could still target a tight end early, even with the arrivals of Seferian-Jenkins and Paul. Lewis has one or two years left as a blocking tight end and Seferian-Jenkins still hasn't lived up to his second-round pedigree. If the Jaguars avoid the position in the draft, the fourth spot will probably come down to O'Shaughnessy or Koyack.

WR) Marqise Lee, Donte Moncrief, Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole, Allen Hurns, Jaydon Mickens, Rashad Greene, Shane Wynn, Jaelen Strong, Lamar Atkins, Tevaun Smith

Thoughts: The Jaguars brought back Lee and signed Moncrief to establish a veteran duo at the top of the depth chart. Moncrief's arrival seemingly knocks Hurns down the depth chart with Cole and Westbrook developing nicely in the offense. If Hurns were to be cut, Mickens, Greene and Wynn would be in prime position to earn the fifth spot, as well as the starting punt returner job. Strong is likely to start the year on the physically unable to perform list, as he suffered a torn ACL in Week 16 of last season.

OL) Cam Robinson (LT), Andrew Norwell (LG), Brandon Linder (C), A.J. Cann (RG), Jermey Parnell (RT), Josh Wells, Tyler Shatley, Josh Walker, Chris Reed, William Poehls, Avery Gennesy, Brandon Thomas

Thoughts: The Norwell signing provides a massive boost for the Jaguars' starting offensive line. While the Jaguars have cultivated enough experienced depth to feel good about injury insurance, the future of the right tackle position needs to be considered. Parnell isn't getting any younger or cheaper and having his heir apparent around for a year would be ideal. The Jaguars are likely to address the tackle position at some point in the draft.

DL) Yannick Ngakoue, Malik Jackson, Marcell Dareus, Calais Campbell, Dante Fowler, Abry Jones, Dawuane Smoot, Eli Ankou, Carroll Phillips, Kapron Lewis-Moore

Thoughts: The best depth on the roster comes from the defensive line. While teams could always use upgrades at all positions, the Jaguars are in such good shape along the defensive line that it wouldn't be shocking to see them avoid that side of the trenches throughout the offseason.

LB) Telvin Smith, Myles Jack, Blair Brown, Lerentee McCray, Donald Payne, Deon King, Brooks Ellis

Thoughts: The linebacker position is a clear area of need for Jacksonville. The Jaguars have two strong starters in Smith and Jack but the team needs to find its starting SAM linebacker. Brown deserves first crack at earning the strong-side job, but the Jaguars are in a position to upgrade over the former fifth-round pick. McCray and Payne are special teams aces who are still question marks on defense. King and Ellis will try to crack the lineup with strong training camp performances.

CB) Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye, D.J. Hayden, Tyler Patmon, Jalen Myrick, Dexter McDougle, Sammy Seamster

Thoughts: The Jaguars' top three cornerbacks are clearly secured but the team could afford to draft some depth in April. Patmon, Myrick, McDougle and Seamster should all be battling for one spot instead of two. The Jaguars need a long-term backup plan for Hayden in case he doesn't adjust well to playing significant nickel snaps in the slot.

S) Tashaun Gipson, Barry Church, Cody Davis, Jarrod Wilson, Don Carey, Charlie Miller

Thoughts: For the first time in a long time, the Jaguars have some steady depth at safety. Gipson and Church are the starters, but don't be surprised if Davis and Wilson receive some looks on defense as well. Davis, Wilson and Carey are expected to be key contributors on special teams.

K) Josh Lambo

Thoughts: Lambo was on fire after taking over for Jason Myers last season. The Jaguars may add a camp leg to monitor Lambo's reps, but as of now, he is locked in.

P) Brad Nortman

Thoughts: While there was some thought that Nortman could be cut, he remains on the roster. He is likely to see competition in some form during training camp.

LS) Carson Tinker, Colin Holba

Thoughts: Tinker's rehab from an ACL tear in last year's training camp has seemingly gone well. The veteran will compete with his second replacement, Holba, during training camp.
