The year 2018 has started some really awful “challenges” that have gone viral. Many of them are dangerous to public health.
Here’s a compilation of some of the most viral challenges that have come across social media in the last few years:
Hot Coil Challenge
The latest challenge calls for folks to place their arm on the extremely hot coils of a kitchen stove and (I guess) see how long a person can hold their arm to the fiery hot coils before moving the arm away. We can’t believe we have to say this but don’t try this at home. It causes disfigurement to your limbs and potential burns that may not go away.
Tide Pod Challenge
The most notorious of challenges in 2018 is the “Tide Pod Challenge.” Called the “Forbidden Fruit” by some online, the trend has people ingesting the pods and recording themselves doing so for reactions on social media. The problem is ingesting the pods is poisonous and a danger to a person’s health, causing many to call poison control in response to the challenge. The “Tide Pod Challenge” has stemmed memes, editorial think pieces and even tattoos (I’m not kidding).
Hobby Lobby Challenge
This one’s kind of funny, but more importantly: It’s harmless. The trend calls for you to find something in a Hobby Lobby store that can be used as a backdrop for a selfie or photo taken by someone else. It’s garnered some viral status online prompting many to share their artsy photos from their strolls down the aisles of Hobby Lobby.
Blue Whale Challenge
This challenge is really troubling but also is a bit of an enigma. The challenge has been classified by some publications as a form of cyber-bullying aimed at getting kids to inflict harm to themselves over a number of days before ultimately committing suicide. The challenge also calls for participants to carve a blue whale into their arms. Do not try this challenge in any shape or form.
Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge
This challenge was kind of humorous to watch when it went on over the last year or so, but it could lead to some issues with your lips. Participants in this challenge would follow a set of steps to make their lips look like Kylie Jenner’s, but the end result caused more problems than what people were anticipating. The Washington Post has a breakdown of why this was a concerning trend.
If someone’s tried to convince you to eat a spoonful of cinnamon, then they are trying to get you to partake in the cinnamon challenge. This challenge doesn’t taste good, can cause intense coughing and other issues, according to CNN.
