The future of dog racing is in the hands of Florida voters

A ban on dog racing is one of eight constitutional amendments that will appear on the ballot in November.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Voters will determine the future of dog racing in the Sunshine State when they head to the polls this November.

A ban on dog racing is one of eight constitutional amendments that will appear on the ballot in November.

Heather Adams, who rescued a retired racing dog plans to vote in favor of the ban.

“I’m really excited that the bill is actually going to be on the November ballot so the people can decide if greyhound racing should be legal or not," Adams said.

Al Smith who bets on the dogs believes it won't get the votes it needs.

"I don't think they'll ever succeed in stopping dog racing,"' Davis said.

The proposal comes after a 2017 First Coast News investigation that exposed racing dogs tested positive for cocaine metabolites at Best Bet in Orange Park.

Best Bet did not provide anyone to answer questions Tuesday, but voters believe the investigation will play a large role in the upcoming vote.

“I believe they want it banned due to the doping of the dogs," Smith said.

“I think First Coast News brought it to light for the community at large for sure," Adams said.

If 60 percent of Floridians vote in favor of the ban, dog racing will become illegal Jan. 1, 2021.
