St. Petersburg library renamed to honor former Pres. Obama

The library is getting a $6M renovation.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The St. Petersburg main library has been renamed to honor former President Barack Obama.

That dedication happened on Monday. St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman says the facility will get a $6 million renovation, as well.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, discussions about how to honor the nation’s first African-American president began more than a year ago.

Kriseman said President Obama’s legacy was being honored with school sand streets named after him, but St. Petersburg leaders felt a library, “ where books are read, ideas are exchanged, research is conducted and where forums and lectures can take place” was appropriate.
