Man killed in Oceanway area house fire, woman hospitalized

One disabled male resident was killed in the fire while a second female resident was left in serious condition, authorities said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person was killed in an early morning fire in the Oceanway area.

Officials responded to a house fire at 12800 Shims Road around 3:30 a.m..

One disabled male resident was killed in the fire while a second female resident was left in serious condition, authorities said. Crews struggled to rescue the disabled victim due to the intense flames and holes in the floor of the home.

Officials said both residents were elderly. Their identity has not been released.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crews have previously responded to the home for medical calls, officials confirmed. 

The cause of the fire is unknown, at this time. However, police said in a media briefing they don't see evidence of foul play.
