U.S. Marine crashes aircraft that embarked from Mayport-based ship in Africa

An AV-8B Harrier pilot is being treated for injuries after ejecting during takeoff from Djibouti Ambouli International Airport in Africa, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.

An AV-8B Harrier pilot is being treated for injuries after ejecting during takeoff from Djibouti Ambouli International Airport in Africa, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.

The harrier was assigned to the USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship from Mayport and the pilot ejected during takeoff and the aircraft crashed soon after.

Doctors told the Marine Corps that the pilot was in stable condition while being evaluated at Camp Lemonnier’s medical facility, the Marine Corps said in a news release.

No personnel on the ground were injured and there was no damage to the airport’s infrastructure.

The accident’s cause is currently under investigation.

The pilot is not from Mayport, but he was assigned to a Mayport-based ship.
