Local man makes repeated trips to help Hurricane Michael victims

The elections, the wildfires in California. It seems like those pressing issues have pushed hurricane Michael's destruction in the panhandle off the radar. But that's not the case for one local man named Steve Lowe.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --The elections, the wildfires in California -- it seems like those pressing issues have pushed Hurricane Michael's destruction in the Panhandle off the radar.

But that's not the case for one local man named Steve Lowe.

Monday, Lowe scoured thrift stores for supplies to take the Florida panhandle to help hurricane victims.

He was looking for blankets, warm clothes and sleeping bags.

"The need is so great there," he said as he walked around Goodwill in St. Augustine.

He takes the supplies in his own car.

He said about his car as he opened the back hatch, "It's pretty empty right now. Usually, I can't see out the back when I go over there."

Lowe has already made five trips to the Panhandle since the hurricane hit. From his homes in Flagler County, that's a good 250 miles one way.

He first went days after the hurricane struck to check on friends.

"I went through Matthew and Irma. I know the need. I just didn't know how much 'til I got there," Lowe said.

Even more than a month after the storm, even with large support efforts on the ground, people wait in line to get food, he said.

"There is a lot of help, but it's concentrated mostly in the cities where most people live, but the rural areas are full of people, too," Lowe explained. "These people are living in tents in their backyards."

And now it's getting cold.

Why is this one man on a mission? He lost his wife to cancer six years ago. Afterward, "I went to bed for months praying that I wouldn't wake up because I did not want to be here."

But then, he was inspired to live.

"I had a blessed life with my wife and I want to help other people and spread the love she gave me, to them," he said.

And so he keeps scouring discount and thrift stores ... and driving to where the need is.

"I'll be heading back after Thanksgiving again and keep going as long as I can," he said.
