JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 2-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon after drowning in a pool on the Westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday in the 8200 block of W. Hamden Circle, where police found a child unresponsive in the pool. The boy's parents identified the child as Colton Holbrook. He was taken to Orange Park Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to JSO.

The boy's father and stepmother were both at the home at the time of the incident, and the boy was believed to be sleeping in his room. The boy's father, Kevin Holbrook, told First Coast News he checked on the mail and took his eyes off him for about 15 minutes when he discovered the child was not in bed. He said his son loved the water and immediately ran to the pool. That's when he saw Colton floating face down in the water.

Holbrook said he found a stuffed animal that was originally in his son's bedroom in the water, and believed his son dropped it in the pool and tried to go after it. He said this incident is a reminder for all parents to always keep an eye on their kids.

The investigation into the child's death is ongoing, but investigators believe his death is an accident. The toddler's parents say an autopsy will be performed early next week and he will be buried in Alabama.
