A beach advisory has been issued for South Beach at the lighthouse on St. Simons Island on Tuesday after certain bacteria levels in the water were found to be above the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended standards.

The Glynn County Health Department said the advisory stretches throughout South Beach, which is from 9th Street to the pier.

The department says water samples found enterococcus bacteria, which can cause infection in people when it enters wounds, blood or urine. The amount was higher than EPA standards.

At this time, they don't know where the bacteria came from, but believe some sources could include animal waste, stormwater runoff or boating waste.

The beach is not closed, but health officials recommend that you do not swim or wade in the water while the advisory is in effect. Any fish or seafood caught in this area should also be thoroughly washed with fresh water and thoroughly cooked.

No word on when the advisory will be lifted.
