POMONA PARK, Fla.—A wildfire in Putnam County forced the evacuation of 40 homes in the Pomona Park area Friday afternoon, authorities say. The order was lifted just before 9:30 p.m. Friday.
A community wildfire shelter was opened at Howe Memorial United Methodist Church (link to Google Maps). the church is at 252 Summit St., Crescent City, FL 32112 and subsequently closed. Residents are now allowed to return home.
The wildfire grew to five acres before being contained near U.S. 17 and Paradise Shores Road, a spokesperson for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says. An aircraft dropped water on the fire 13 times, the Florida Forest Service says.
The first is 80 percent contained at this time, Forest officials say. A single home was damaged.
Multiple crews fought back the fire, but families aren't yet allowed to return home due to the significant danger the fire still poses. Residents will be allowed home as soon as the danger dies down.
