Corrections officer arrested, charged with aggravated battery

He said the officer thought the victim was faking his level of intoxication because they had to carry him in with a wheelchair and that Libby struck him in the nose.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla - A JSO corrections officer was arrested Thursday for reportedly battering a man while he was being processed, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO arrested 23-year-old William Shane Libby, a 15-month veteran with JSO.

Undersheriff Pat Ivey said a 62-year-old man was arrested in Jacksonville Beach for a DUI. He was transported to JSO and while he was being processed and had to take a breathalyzer test, Ivey said Libby battered the victim.

He said the officer thought the victim was faking his level of intoxication because they had to carry him in with a wheelchair and that Libby struck him in the nose.

Ivey said Libby was also charged with official misconduct. He said the report that Libby filed regarding the incident didn't accurately reflect what happened.

Libby was terminated on Thursday and arrested on a second-degree felony of aggravated battery and a third-degree felony of falsifying an official document.

Ivey said this marks their third arrest for battery among their officers.
