Officer-involved shooting on the Westside; no officers injured

JSO says there were officers that were wearing body cameras at the scene.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to an officer-involved shooting in the Paxon area of Jacksonville Friday.

JSO said shortly after 4 p.m., police identified a traffic violator who would not cooperate with police order to pull over.

Police then saw a passenger, holding a handgun, leave the vehicle and flee on foot.

At least two other people in the car went a different direction on foot. Officers chased the armed passenger suspect into the yard of a home.

Ron Lendvay, director of JSO's Department of Investigations and Homeland Security said the officers interacted with the suspect and several shots were fired by one officer. Lendvay said current reports do not show that the suspect fired his handgun. The suspect was injured and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

JSO and the State Attorney's Office continue to investigate the incident that occured a few blocks from Paxon High, Paxon School for Advanced Studies and James Weldon Johnson Middle School. Lendvay said no students were present in the vicinity of the chase.

No officers were injured in the incident and the suspect is in critical but stable condition at the hospital.

JSO says body camera footage worn by the officers at the scene is being reviewed.

Police actively searched for but were not able to located the other people in the suspect's car who fled on foot. Other than traffic violations, Lendvay said they are not wanted for a crime but for questioning.

Identities of the officers and suspects have not been released.
