Jacksonville Public Library seeking alternatives after 'Pride Prom' cancellation

The Jacksonville Public Library canceled its StoryBook Pride Prom event that was scheduled for June 28 citing safety concerns stemming from protests.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Public released a statement via Facebook Tuesday saying they are discussing alternatives after deciding to cancel the LGBTQ-themed "Storybook Pride Prom."

"We understand the frustration of many about the recent cancellation of our Pride Prom planned for this Friday," said library officials in a post to Facebook. "We are disappointed that we cannot move forward with the event as planned and are now discussing alternatives in keeping with our original spirit and intent."

The Jacksonville Public Library canceled its StoryBook Pride Prom event that was scheduled for June 28 citing safety concerns stemming from protests. 

The event was planned to be an LGBTQ-themed prom for teens 14-18 years old at the Willowbranch location. 

"We stand by our decision to create the event, just as we stand by our decision to cancel it when we felt the teens’ safety could not be guaranteed," library officials said.
