Grass roots project takes action and voices sorrow

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Just a few feet away from the carousel at Davenport Park in St. Augustine, a grass roots project was underway Monday ... at picnic tables.

Adults and children took action. They were voicing concern about current gun laws and they drew caring cards on construction paper.

Student Jamie Parkey made a card for children in Parkland with the names of the 17 who were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"It makes me sad because that's a lot of names," she said. "They should've had a chance to live more."

While children made cards for the victims and their families in South Florida, adults were writing letters to legislators about gun violence.

"It was a community event. I initiated it," Molly Shields of St. Augustine felt she had to do something. "If we don't make a change now, another tragedy will occur."

"I'm terrified at the rapidity and pace in which we see these mass murders," Carl David Soto said. He has tried to explain to his children what happened in Parkland. He doesn't think the general public should have access to assault weapons. "It takes each and every one of us to come out and participate."

T-shirts were also sold to raise money for the victims' families.

So at one park, full of children, there was fundraising, kindness with crayons, and a push to stop the wheel of violence.
