JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 15-year-old girl died Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle near the Sandalwood district.

Police say Elizabeth "Lizzy" Ross was struck by a white Kia at 8 a.m. while crossing the road near 10700 Alden Rd.

It is believed that she might have been on her way to school at the time of the accident.

Police say Elizabeth was transported to an emergency center with life-threatening injuries but later died at the hospital.

This remains an open and ongoing investigation though police say speed does not appear to be a factor and the driver did not exhibit any indicators of being impaired.

14-year-old Aaliyah Rogers was walking just ahead of Elizabeth across Alden Road. Aaliyah says she had crossed the street, when she turned to look at Elizabeth to see her crossing too.

There were no cars, Aaliyah says, when she says a lady came driving past and Elizabeth was struck.

"She was tight. she was joyful, she was caring... She loved having fun," said Aaliyah Rogers, Elizabeth's cousin.

Elizabeth's aunt, Krystle Leonard, works as a school bus driver and says she sees bad drivers and close calls involving students everyday while driving her bus.

She's started a GoFundMe for Lizzy's funeral expenses.

"She was an amazing girl. She was just the most caring person I could just say, she would do anything for you, and she would never argue with you or nothing. She was just an amazing little girl," said Leonard.
