#GilchristStrong: Motto of a grieving town

Sound cutting through the silence as letters fall from a business sign along Wade Street in Trenton, Florida.

Each letter is an emotion of the town, still in shock after two deputies were gunned down at a nearby restaurant.

“We need to get together to focus on lifting people up,” Robin Smith said.

She is just one in a town of about 2,000 people. In Trenton, the words are not “I” or “me,” but “we” and “our.”

“Without the people of the county, we’re nobody. We’re a family and this is just us focusing on that,” Smith said.

It’s where the marquee signs do most of the talking, and church steeples rise above the trees.

“We need to pray, for the families, for the police officers for the county, for everybody; we’re at a bad time in life,” Smith added.

A bad time for this tiny town left to cope with two fewer members of their family trying to stay strong; Gilchrist Strong.

“I pray it doesn’t happen in another tiny town or a big city it just needs to stop,” Smith said.
