An unloaded handgun was found in a student's possession Thursday at Needwood Middle School in Glynn County, Georgia during a school police led inspection, authorities say.

The sixth grade student was immediately removed from the school and taken to Glynn County Juvenile Court where he was charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus, a release from the district's police department says.

Police were conducting K-9 inspections on all Glynn County middle schools Thursday when they discovered a .380-caliber Taurus gun in the 13-year-old's book bag inside a classroom.

The school wasn't placed on lockdown because school officials and police were in the classroom when the gun was found.
