Two Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) were involved in an officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon near Keystone Heights, CCSO said. Deputies say 47-year-old George Robert Nelson was injured.
The shooting happened at 8202 Lake Echo Ridge Drive. CCSO said deputies were called out in reference to a man shooting a shotgun.
When they arrived on scene, deputies tried to get Nelson to drop the weapon, but the man pointed the shotgun in the direction of one of the deputies, CCSO said.
Two deputies fired and struck the man several times, deputies said. Nelson was transported to UF Health Shands Gainesville. Clay County Fire Rescue said Nelson is in critical condition. The deputies were not injured.
"Anytime somebody's shooting a weapon like that in a neighborhood... anybody in the surrounding area nearby is in harm's way," said CCSO Sheriff Darryl Daniels.
Dean Slocumb, a neighbor who has lived in the area for 20 years told First Coast News that he heard six to eight shots in the area. He said he thought someone was doing target practice.
"We hear shots out here all the time," Slocumb said. "I mean people target practice or are killing a snake or something, so you know it wasn't really bad."
The deputies were placed on administrative leave. CCSO said it's not releasing names at this point, but said one of the deputies is a 17-year vet and the other has been on the force for three-to-five years.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation.
