State fire marshal investigating possible arson case after American Legion post catches fire

A possible early morning arson occurred at a local American Legion post.

A possible early morning arson occurred at a local American Legion post.

First Coast News spoke to the head of American Legion Post 9 on New Kings Road.

Lena Heredia-Perez arrived Sunday morning to find the building burned and badly damaged.

When we spoke to her this morning, she said it appeared to be an electrical fire. Later this afternoon, she said the state fire marshal is now investigating the blaze as an arson.

Heredia-Perez says the building appears to have been burglarized before it was set on fire around 6:15 a.m. Sunday.

The post does not have insurance on the contents of the building, which is a total loss. But she is confident the post’s members will pull together to help.

“There’s nothing we can’t overcome those are my brothers and sisters we’ve got each other’s backs make sure that we get this taken care of,” she said.
