SWAT standoff near Murray Middle School in St. Johns County ends with suspect in custody

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said one man was barricaded in a home and the SWAT team was on scene.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla — A SWAT standoff in St. Augustine ended after three and a half hours with a suspect in custody Sunday afternoon.

At around 12 p.m., the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office got a call about a domestic incident in which the suspect was reported to have been firing shots at a car with people inside.

The sheriff's office said no one was injured but the suspect fled into a house on Collier Street, where a child was inside. The sheriff's office said the suspect is affiliated with the house but did not elaborate further.

The SWAT team tried to communicate with the suspect, even throwing a phone inside the house to speak to him, but to no avail.

At 3:30 p.m., First Coast News was on the scene when the SWAT team used a battering ram to go into the house. Once inside, the suspect was found hiding underneath the home, having cut holes in its flooring.

Law enforcement was able to get the child out of the home.

The sheriff's office said the suspect faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
