Man killed during officer-involved shooting in Nassau County, FDLE investigating

NCSO said the deputy will be placed on administrative leave and will have to go through an evaluation to make sure he is okay to return to work.

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Nassau County.

According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a report of a suicide threat at a home in Yulee around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

When deputies arrived at the home, they knocked on a side door to see if anyone was there.

Deputies then noticed a man inside and began communicating with him to see if he was okay.

The sheriff's office said the man became "agitated" with a deputy and told him to "get ready."

The man then came outside and lunged at the deputy while holding two butcher-styled knives in his hand, NCSO said.

"Obviously he had a death wish when he lunged at the officers with the knives. He got what he wanted," Sheriff Bob Leeper told First Coast News.

The deputy shot the man and he died at the scene.

Authorities have not released the deceased individual's name, but they did confirm he was 39 years old.

NCSO said the deputy will be placed on administrative leave and will have to go through an evaluation to make sure he is okay to return to work.

The deputy has been with the sheriff's office for about nine years and this is his first officer-involved shooting.

Nassau County does not have police body cameras, but Sheriff Leeper says he's looking to go through any available home surveillance cameras.
