The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has identified the man accused of throwing what police are calling "lit pipe bombs" into a parking lot of a dentist's office off Roosevelt Boulevard Friday night.

Around 7:30 p.m., a woman drove by the James Schumacher dentist office near 4201 Roosevelt Boulevard and saw smoke. She told police she thought the dentist's office was on fire.

JSO responded to the scene and found a man, identified as Robert Peterson, fitting the description standing on a balcony in the 4400 block of St. Johns Avenue working on a motorbike. For safety reasons, JSO said they detained him.

An officer searched the area and said he found three suspicious items. JSO set up a perimeter around the man's residence and JSO's Bomb Squad was called out. The Bomb Squad confirmed the items were pipe bombs.

One of the pipe bombs exploded, but two others didn't, police told First Coast News.

When questioned, Peterson told police he was trying to make smoke bombs for the Fourth of July, police said.

Peterson was arrested and booked into jail.

The investigation is ongoing.
